Christ Church has an ongoing partnership with Highland Park Learning Center, an inner city Roanoke public school in the Old Southwest neighborhood, along with our congregational partners in Old Southwest called Congregations in Action (CIA-OSW).  Church members volunteer as tutors for individuals or small groups of students and help with school projects such as our annual Highland Park Fun Day in May and Fall and Spring Teacher Appreciation lunches.

Fall 2007

  • School supplies collection: The beginning of fall classes brings the need for extra school supplies for indigent families.  A collection box and supply list will be posted in the Parish Hall as needed.

  • Pac-A-Snack collection: Take-home non-perishable food items are needed for needy Highland Park students.  Below is a list of suggested items.

    Cereal

    Granola bars

    Peanut butter or cheese crackers

    Raisins or other dried fruit

    Trail mix

Boxed drinks or Capri sun drinks

    puddings

  • Second Harvest Food Bank Back Pack Meals:  Second Harvest Food Bank is partnering with the Highland Park School and CIA to provide more substantial meals for malnourished children and their families.  Volunteers are needed as registered Second Harvest Shoppers occasionally to pick up food and supplies at Second Harvest and transport them to Highland Park School.  For more details on Second Harvest go to: http://swvafoodbank.org/

  • At-Risk Youth programs are being encouraged and supported in our neighborhood and in the Roanoke Community.  Volunteer support is needed in many areas to prevent youth drug use and violence.
